Banana Leaf style guqin / Banana Leaf guqin
Banana Leaf Guqin — A Living Relic, Reborn in Sound
This guqin is built from reclaimed timber salvaged from century-old Chinese homes — beams and pillars that have absorbed decades of history before finding new life as a musical instrument.
Among all guqin forms, the Banana Leaf (Jiao Ye) is considered the most demanding to craft. The body must be hand-carved from raw timber to faithfully replicate the organic contours of a banana leaf — each curve sculpted by hand, both sides held to perfect symmetry, all while preserving the acoustic integrity of the instrument. When the soundboard and back panel are joined, the fit must be absolutely seamless, with no gap tolerated anywhere along the seam.
The body is reinforced with a traditional lacquer ground of tile ash (wa hui) and premium babao hui (eight-treasure ash), creating a resonant shell that deepens in tone over time. Over one to two years, seven to eight coats of raw Chinese lacquer (sheng qi) are hand-applied and cured — a process that cannot be rushed.
Throughout construction, the instrument is continuously voiced and adjusted until the sound reaches its fullest expression.
Finishing details are chosen to reflect the player's character:
- Inlaid hui markers in mother-of-pearl, jade, or 24K gold
- Strung with premium steel strings or traditional silk strings
- Inscribed on the soundboard with the player's chosen name, poem, or date — a mark of distinction that makes each instrument entirely one-of-a-kind
No two instruments are alike. Each guqin carries the grain of its timber, the hand of its maker, and the voice of its own.
