For most of human history, instrument strings were made from animal gut.
Sheep intestine, to be precise. Cleaned, dried, twisted under tension. It works remarkably well — gut strings are warm, responsive, and still used today on baroque instruments and classical guitars.
The Europeans refined this technology for centuries. So did the Arabs. So did the Indians.
The Chinese went in a different direction entirely.
They used silk.
But not simply by winding a thread around a peg. First the cocoons are reeled into raw silk. Then dozens — sometimes over a hundred — individual filaments are twisted together by hand into a single string. The guqin has seven strings, each a different thickness, each requiring a different count of silk filaments. The thickest first string uses 81 threads of silk. The thinnest seventh string uses 36.
Every string is its own handmade object.

There is a Chinese concept — sheng wai zhi yin — the sound beyond the sound. The idea that what matters most in music is not the note itself, but what lingers after it ends.
Gut strings sustain. Silk strings breathe.
The guqin has used silk strings for three thousand years. When you slide your finger along a silk string, you hear the friction — a small, human sound that steel would never make. It is the sound of contact. Of presence.
Europe chose power. China chose intimacy.
Both were right. But only one of them sounds like this.
