Yu Qiao Wen Da (渔樵问答) — "A Conversation Between a Fisherman and a Woodcutter" — is one of the most beloved and enduring pieces in the guqin repertoire. Two ancient figures meet on a mountain path, each content with his simple life, exchanging unhurried questions about the nature of the world. The music moves like water and wind — never in a hurry, never at rest.
This is a live performance by William Xu, recorded at the 4th Yuyuan Silk Society Yaji (愚园丝社雅集) on April 11, 2026 — an intimate gathering of scholars, artists, and qin lovers held at Yuyuan Garden. The Yaji tradition, in which literati gather to share music, poetry, and conversation, is itself an echo of the world the Fisherman and Woodcutter inhabit.
