Yi Gu Ren is a piece about longing — not the sharp pain of loss, but the deep, quiet ache of remembering someone who is no longer there.
Based on the Liqin Xuan manuscript collection of the modern scholar Peng Zhiqing, the piece unfolds in six sections. The melody is profound and flowing, its structure carefully built — each section's fingering shifts layer by layer, carrying the feeling of remembrance through its full arc: from quiet reflection, to stirring emotion, to a depth that settles beyond words.
It does not dramatize grief. It simply holds it — the way memory holds a person: not as they were at the end, but as they were at their best.
In the guqin tradition, Yi Gu Ren is one of those rare pieces that does not need explanation. Everyone who has ever missed someone already knows what it is saying.
